Meet The Biomarker Family
Because Cancer Isn't Just One Thing
If you've ever sat across from your oncologist and heard words like HER2-Low, PD-L1, BRCA, NGS, or Tumor Microenvironment, you're not alone if your first thought was:
"What does any of that even mean?"
For years, I've watched patients quietly nod during appointments, afraid to ask questions because the language of cancer has become so technical. It’s really hard to retain information in such a pressurized environment. The doctors office can be overwhelming. As a advocate, patient navigator and survivor, I hear the same thing over and over again:
"Karen, I wish someone would just explain it in plain English."
So...that's exactly what I'm going to do.
Welcome to The Biomarker Family—a new educational series from Karen's Club where science meets storytelling.
Instead of introducing you to complicated medical terms, I'd like you to meet them as people (well characters..but ya’ll know what I mean).
Because once you understand their personalities, you'll never forget why they matter.
Karen’s Club - The Biomarker Family
Why Should Patients Care?
Because if cancer changes...
Your treatment options can change too.
Many patients believe that once they've had a biopsy, the story is finished.
In reality, cancer can evolve.
A tumor sampled years ago may not look exactly the same today.
As cancer grows or spreads to different parts of the body, new characteristics—or biomarkers—may appear.
That's one reason your medical team may recommend:
A repeat biopsy
Additional biomarker testing
Next-generation sequencing (NGS)
New molecular testing after progression
These aren't unnecessary tests.
They're opportunities to learn something new about your cancer.
Why I Talk About Biomarker Testing So Much
If you've followed Karen's Club for any length of time, you've probably heard me ask one question more than almost any other:
"Have you had biomarker testing?" *( (1)The Cleveland Clinic does a great job of explaining what biomarker testing is and Karen’s Club plans to explore in depth each week)
There's a reason.
Biomarker testing helps doctors understand what makes your cancer unique.
It can identify:
Gene mutations
Protein expression
Treatment targets
Clinical trial opportunities
New therapies that may not have existed when you were first diagnosed
The more we understand about the biology of a tumor, the more personalized treatment decisions can become.
That's the promise of precision medicine.
Join the Family
Every week, I'll introduce another member of the Biomarker Family through videos, blogs, and social media.
By the end of this series, words that once felt intimidating will begin to feel familiar.
My hope is that the next time you hear terms like HER2-Low, PD-L1, BRCA, or NGS in your doctor's office, you'll smile and think...
"Oh...I know them."
And that's where informed decision-making begins.
