The Oncology Super Bowl Just Ended. Here's What Patients Need to Know.

What I like to call the Oncology Super Bowl just took place at the beginning of June in Chicago at the ASCO Annual Conference. Think of ASCO as the Super Bowl of cancer research. Every year, the world's leading cancer experts gather to announce groundbreaking studies, new treatment options, and research that may shape how cancer is diagnosed and treated in the future.

So what was some of the biggest cancer news to come out of ASCO 2026, and how could it improve survival for patients?

  • A Potential Game-Changer for Pancreatic Cancer

One of the most talked-about announcements at ASCO 2026 was the presentation of data from the Phase 3 RASolute 302 trial evaluating daraxonrasib, an investigational oral therapy for metastatic pancreatic cancer. According to ASCO, the treatment nearly doubled overall survival compared with standard chemotherapy in previously treated patients. The findings generated such excitement during the meeting that attendees reportedly gave the presentation a standing ovation, with several experts describing the results as potentially practice-changing.

  • DATROWAY Continues to Build Excitement for MBC

Datopotamab deruxtecan (DATROWAY/Dato-DXd) generated significant attention as researchers continue to evaluate its role in metastatic breast cancer. The drug has also received Priority Review in the U.S. for certain first-line metastatic triple-negative breast cancer patients who are not candidates for immunotherapy. So, you ask why is this important? Metastatic triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is the most aggressive form of breast cancer, historically carrying an incredibly poor prognosis. I was diagnosed with a subset of mTNBC in 2017 and was treated with immunotherapy only, but for the roughly 70% of these patients who have low PD-L1 expression or other clinical factors, immunotherapy is not an option. For decades, these patients were forced to rely purely on traditional, chemotherapies as their initial treatment line.

Karen’s Club was blessed with a quote from someone who we know very well, who actually participated in this particular clinical trial. This young mother of two was generous enough to share a quote about here experience:

I may be fighting for my life today, but through clinical trial participation, I’m helping create better options for those who came after me. That is the power of legacy. -Michelle Anderson-Benjamin aka The Fearless Warrior

  • The Rise of AI in Oncology

How is AI changing the oncology games. Check out the exciting breakthroughs:

  • The Artera Breast AI Tool - a newly FDA approved software based digital pathology tool designed to predict the risk of cancer recurrence and guide chemotherapy decisions for patients with early stage breast cancer.

  • GigaTime - Developed by researchers at the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Miami, this tool personalizes treatment strategies for newly diagnosed multiple myeloma patients. The tool reads hidden structural and immune signals directly from existing slides, eliminating the need for expensive or time-consuming genomic tests
