đź’ˇCould Chronic Inflammation Be Fueling Cancer? Here's What Scientists Are Learning
Recently, I watched a fascinating interview featuring Pulitzer Prize-winning oncologist and author Dr. Siddhartha Mukherjee, best known for his book The Emperor of All Maladies. The conversation, hosted by Oprah Winfrey, also included actor Chadwick Boseman's widow, Simonne Ledward Boseman, and centered on where cancer research is headed next.
Like many cancer survivors, I'm always interested in hearing directly from the scientists who are trying to answer some of the biggest questions in oncology. What caught my attention wasn't just the discussion about cancer—it was how researchers are beginning to think differently about it.
For decades, scientists focused on one fundamental question:
What caused the very first cancer cell to form?
Today, many researchers are asking another equally important question:
What kind of environment allows cancer to survive, spread, or return?
That shift in thinking has brought renewed attention to chronic inflammation.
Recent research suggests chronic inflammation may be one of several factors that influences the environment surrounding cancer cells and could play a role in reactivating dormant cancer cells. While this remains an active area of research—not an established cause-and-effect relationship—it represents one of the most exciting frontiers in cancer science.
After doing some digging, I found dozens of scientific papers exploring the relationship between chronic inflammation and diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, autoimmune disorders, and cancer.
So...what exactly is inflammation?
According to Dr. Mukherjee, “inflammation is essentially the chronic or acute activation of the immune system”.
Think of Your Immune System Like a Home Alarm System
Acute inflammation is like your home alarm going off because someone is trying to break in. The alarm sounds, help arrives, the problem is solved, and the alarm turns off.
Chronic inflammation is like that alarm getting stuck in the "ON" position. Even though the immediate danger has passed, the alarm keeps blaring day after day, creating unnecessary stress on the entire system.
Simply put, chronic inflammation is a long-lasting immune response in which the body continues sending inflammatory signals even after they are no longer needed.
Can We Actually Reduce Chronic Inflammation?
That's the question I immediately asked myself.
As a Stage IV cancer survivor, I'm constantly wondering what I can do to support my health. I drink green tea with turmeric, make fresh beet, carrot, lemon, and ginger juice, and I never turn down a good kale, avocado, and pumpkin seed salad.
But if I'm being honest...I'm not the expert.
So what do the experts recommend?
The encouraging news is that while we can't control every factor that contributes to inflammation, researchers agree there are lifestyle habits that support overall health and may help reduce chronic inflammation.
1. Choose an Anti-Inflammatory Eating Pattern - Diet
Many experts recommend a Mediterranean-style eating pattern because it is naturally rich in nutrients associated with lower levels of inflammation.
Focus on:
Fatty fish such as salmon and sardines
Leafy green vegetables
Berries
Nuts
Olive oil
Beans and legumes
Try to limit:
Sugary drinks
Highly processed foods
Foods high in added sugars
Processed meats such as bacon, sausage, and hot dogs
Flavor meals with herbs and spices such as turmeric, ginger, garlic, rosemary, and cinnamon.
2. Keep Moving
Regular physical activity does much more than strengthen muscles.
Research suggests exercise helps regulate the immune system and reduce inflammatory signaling throughout the body.
Experts generally recommend working toward at least 150 minutes of moderate physical activity each week.
If that sounds overwhelming, start where you are. Even a short daily walk is a great place to begin.
3. Maintain a Healthy Weight
Visceral fat—the fat stored around internal organs—is metabolically active and produces inflammatory chemicals.
Losing even a modest amount of excess weight may help reduce chronic inflammation while also lowering the risk of other chronic diseases such as Type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
4. Prioritize Sleep and Manage Stress
Sleep and stress have a powerful influence on the immune system.
Consistently poor sleep and ongoing stress can contribute to persistent inflammatory responses throughout the body.
Experts recommend:
Aim for seven to nine hours of quality sleep each night.
Practice stress-reduction techniques such as meditation, yoga, deep breathing, or spending time outdoors.
Build moments of recovery into your daily routine.
My Takeaway
Like many of you, I'm learning alongside the science.
What I found encouraging is that while researchers continue investigating the relationship between chronic inflammation and cancer, many of the habits that support a healthier immune system are the same habits that improve our overall quality of life.
Will eating more vegetables guarantee cancer won't return?
No.
Will taking a walk prevent cancer?
No.
But nourishing our bodies, staying active, prioritizing sleep, and managing stress are positive steps we can take while scientists continue searching for more answers.
Knowledge is one of the most powerful tools we have as patients. Understanding the science helps us ask better questions, have more informed conversations with our healthcare teams, and make choices that support our overall health.
